Mind, body and soul when put together
delivers something very unique, that is
flawless and free of any error. Today, if
you ask me the meaning of business, I would
describe it as any activity that is divine
and is a source of knowing your inner self.
Once we know who we really are, we can
enlighten anyone who gets associated. Also,
one shouldn’t forget the roots of the
society from where overall development takes
place.
The carpet industry is the most fragmented
of its kind. There are gaps in the industry
in terms of availability of skilled labour.
This paves a way for the middlemen to
exploit weavers in the rural areas by
bringing them seasonal demands and not
providing them with direct access to
markets. These men of god become poorer day
by day not even realizing their true
potential of getting a sustained living.
There are times when these weavers are also
unemployed for a very long time because the
middlemen do not have contracts or demands
to meet.As a child, I always wanted to see a
community of equal opportunities where
everyone earned what they deserved and had a
sustained livelihood. Today, Jaipur Rugs
follows a social-entrepreneurship model
wherein each weaver who gets in touch with
us earns considerably well in the industry,
is aware of schemes or government aids and
is groomed to be a future leader.
But taking a huge step like this was never
easy. This wouldn’t have been possible
without the support and coordination of my
family members, friends, colleagues and
wishes of these rural weavers with whom we
associate regularly today. Conscientiousness
is the characteristic I improved upon. Over
the years, I have learnt two very important
aspects that have helped me to reshape my
strategies- overwhelmed customers and
satisfied weavers. To understand what a
customer wants and to link it with a
weaver’s agony has been a long journey.
